Watch and Talk: Tackling Collections Backlogs for Small Museums

Presented in partnership with the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science, SICCA hosted a webinar “watch and talk” event on the topic of tackling collections backlog for small museums.
The event began with pre-webinar networking, followed by the live webinar, and concluded with a post-webinar discussion. It was an excellent opportunity to connect and learn with your peers. Participants shared their collections backlogs issues and peers offered suggestions and advices during the post-webinar discussion.

Indiana State Museum Field Trip

SICCA members had the priviledge to go on a behind-the-scene tour of the Indiana State Museum with the Director of Collections, Traci Cromwell. Traci discussed the successes and challenges the ISM is currently facing. She also answered questions that the group had regarding collections care. Gaby Kienitz, Head of Conservation gave the group a tour of her conservation lab.

Exhibit Design & Planning Workshop

Location: Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy, Vincennes, IN

Led by Shirley J. Ray, Executive Director and Curator of the Red Skelton Museum of Ameican Comedy, SICCA members learned how to create innovative, crowd pleasing exhibits that fit the budget. Participants also learned the range of options when making exhibit plans keeping in mind interpretation, audience, funding and community impact. After learning exhibit planning concepts, each participant had the opportunity to create their own 3-D exhibition. Ray also gave the group a behind-the-scene tour of the facility.

2nd Annual Meeting

Location: University of Southern Indiana

Hosted by the University of Southern Indiana Library and Archives, Jennifer Greene and Deanna Engler prepared a full-day of activities for SICCA 2nd Annual Meeting. First Jennifer Greene introduced SICCA members the world of archives and how finding aids work. The group then toured the University Archives and the David L. Rice Library. Later the group convened for light refreshments and a round-table discussion of current issues and collaboration opportunities. An optional tour led by the University Art Registrar, Susan Colaricci Sauls was offered toward the end of the day to view the USI 50th anniversary display she conceptionalized and fabricated.
